The use of salt cellars (also called salt boxes) is documented as early as classical Rome. They continued to be used through the first half of the 20th century; however, usage began to decline with the introduction of free-flowing salt in 1911. The past century has seen their household use almost entirely replaced by salt-shakers, but that doesn't mean they have disappeared entirely.
Salt Cellars are still used by many home chef's to store various types of rock or finishing salt. The Salty Cellar is classic french country inspired glass with a lid and will go with any kitchen decor style you have.
